I haven't had cable tv for the past few years, so I never got into shows like SGA, Supernatural, Veronica Mars, &etc, but then my flist started going crazy with tons of fanfic, and then I finally read one of them and was absolutely hooked. For most of these shows, I've only seen a few actual episodes - if any at all - but the bits and pieces of canon that I've picked up from the fic are just so interesting that I've forcibly restrained myself from writing fic more than once. The shows are just insidiously addicting, dammit, and there are just too many good writers spashing around in their fanfic pools.
So I'm asking my flist, and anyone else who stumbles across this post: Do you have secondhand fandoms? Have you written fic (or even just read a ton of it) without seeing or reading much, or even any at all, of the canon material? I know it's not just me who has done this...
ETA To clarify, these are fandoms where you'll actually go looking for interesting fic to read, rather than just read something if someone you really like is writing it. You have to embrace the new fandom... *g*
To satisfy my curiosity, a poll:
How many secondhand fandoms do you officially claim?
0 - I'll only read fic for things whose canon I've experienced firsthand.
7 or more, because if the fic is good I don't care if I'm not familiar with the canon.
What are your secondhand fandoms?
How did you first get interested in these fandoms?
A friend raving about the fandom
An author you love writing fic in the fandom
A fic rec that sounded so good you had to check it out
Another way that I will tell you about in the text box below
So, tell me about your introduction to this new fandom...
Anything else you wanna tell me?
I prefer 'Check Boxes'.
